The joint inspection

The right sand starts with the gap, not the bag.

We inspect the field before choosing material. Standard joints, unusually wide joints, a sand-only job and a seal-ready job do not automatically use the same product or installation sequence.

  • Joint width, depth and remaining material
  • Mixed colors, mortar, silica sand or contamination
  • Loose bricks, edge movement and sunken areas
  • Drainage, washout paths and standing water
Surface check Porosity, old sealer and drainage are reviewed before sand goes in.
Sand selection

Two joint systems. One inspection decides which fits.

We explain the material, color, joint level and next protection step before the work begins.

Standard paver fields ASTM C144 joint sand

Our typical choice for properly sized paver joints. It is available in multiple colors and is prepared for the sealing system when protection is included.

  • Color selected for the paver field
  • Installed to the correct joint level
  • Stabilized by the selected flood-coat system
Wider joints or sand-only scopes Compatible polymeric sand

Binding additives can help on unusually wide joints, often more than about one-half inch, when the chosen product matches the joint width and paver type.

  • Product range checked against joint width
  • Paver face cleared before activation
  • Water applied to the manufacturer's requirements
Where re-sanding fits

Cleaning is only the first decision.

What happens after the joints are clean depends on the coating, porosity, drainage and condition of the pavers.

01 / Clean and re-sand

The pavers are stable and the coating is not failing.

This fits newer or consistently maintained fields that need cleaning and joint correction without a full restoration.

02 / Clean, sand and seal

The joints need rebuilding and the surface needs protection.

ASTM C144 joint sand is installed, then the selected flood-coat and topcoat system stabilizes the field.

03 / Strip and restore

Failed sealer or trapped efflorescence changes the scope.

The old coating and contaminated joints have to be corrected before new sand and sealer can finish evenly.

The field sequence

Clean joints. Correct material. Stable finish.

Each stage protects the paver field from the common blast-and-leave shortcut that causes loose joints and repeat washout.

01

Joint and Surface Inspection

We check joint width and depth, old sand, weeds, ants, loose pavers, edge movement, drainage, porosity and any existing sealer.

02

Controlled Cleaning

We clean the paver surface and remove loose or contaminated joint material without treating the field like poured concrete.

03

Sand System Selection

Standard fields typically receive ASTM C144 joint sand. Wider joints or sand-only scopes may require a compatible polymeric product.

04

Installation and Compaction

The selected sand color is installed to the correct joint level, compacted where required and cleared from the paver face.

05

Sand-Only or Seal-Ready Finish

Polymeric sand is activated when specified. ASTM C144 joints are prepared for the selected flood-coat and topcoat system when sealing is included.

Built for the next step

Re-sanding should make the paver field easier to maintain.

When the joints, drainage and coating plan work together, future visits become maintenance instead of another expensive restart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do pavers need to be re-sanded before sealing?
If the joints are low, loose, contaminated, full of weeds or washing out, they should be corrected before sealing. We select the joint material based on width, depth and scope instead of automatically using polymeric sand.
When do you use polymeric sand?
Polymeric sand contains binding additives and is activated with water. We consider it for unusually wide joints, often more than about one-half inch, or for sand-only scopes where the selected product is compatible with the pavers and joint width.
What sand do you use on standard paver fields?
We typically use ASTM C144 joint sand in the color selected for the project. When sealing is included, the flood-coat system stabilizes that sand inside the joints.
Can you clean pavers without sealing them?
Yes. Some customers only need cleaning and re-sanding. We will recommend sealing when it makes sense, but we do not force it if the surface does not need it yet.
