The joint inspection

The right sand starts with the gap, not the bag.

We inspect the field before choosing material. Standard joints, unusually wide joints, a sand-only job and a seal-ready job do not automatically use the same product or installation sequence.

  • Joint width, depth and remaining material
  • Mixed colors, mortar, poorly graded sand or contamination
  • Loose bricks, edge movement and sunken areas
  • Drainage, washout paths and standing water
Surface check Porosity, old sealer and drainage are reviewed before sand goes in.
Sand selection

Joint-sand gradation comes first. Polymeric is the exception.

We explain the material, color, joint level and next protection step before the work begins.

Standard paver fields Joint joint material selected for the paver type, measured joint width and current manufacturer guidance

For standard interlocking concrete paver fields, we select joint material for the paver type, measured joint width and current manufacturer guidance and follow applicable CMHA/ICPI guidance plus the selected material manufacturer's current instructions.

  • Color selected for the paver field
  • Installed to the correct joint level
  • Compacted and installed to the correct joint level
Compatible pavers with 1/2-inch+ joints Polymeric only when the field qualifies

We consider polymeric only when the measured joints are at least 1/2 inch wide, the paver is compatible, and the manufacturer's current instructions permit that application.

  • Product range checked against joint width
  • Paver face cleared before activation
  • Water applied to the manufacturer's requirements
Where re-sanding fits

Cleaning is only the first decision.

What happens after the joints are clean depends on the coating, porosity, drainage and condition of the pavers.

01 / Clean and re-sand

The pavers are stable and the coating is not failing.

This fits newer or consistently maintained fields that need cleaning and joint correction without a full restoration.

02 / Clean, sand and seal

The joints need rebuilding and the surface needs protection.

We rebuild standard interlocking concrete paver joints with joint material selected for the paver type, measured joint width and current manufacturer guidance, then choose the sealer and coat plan for the actual surface.

03 / Strip and restore

Failed sealer or trapped efflorescence changes the scope.

The old coating and contaminated joints have to be corrected before new sand and sealer can finish evenly.

How the work gets done

Clean joints. Correct material. Stable finish.

Each stage protects the paver field from the common blast-and-leave shortcut that causes loose joints and repeat washout.

01

Joint and Surface Inspection

We check joint width and depth, old sand, weeds, ants, loose pavers, edge movement, drainage, porosity and any existing sealer.

02

Controlled Cleaning

We clean the paver surface and remove loose or contaminated joint material without treating the field like poured concrete.

03

Sand System Selection

Standard interlocking concrete paver fields receive joint material selected for the paver type, measured joint width and written manufacturer guidance. Polymeric is considered only for compatible pavers with measured joints at least 1/2 inch wide when the manufacturer's current instructions permit the application.

04

Installation and Compaction

The selected sand color is installed to the correct joint level, compacted where required and cleared from the paver face.

05

Sand-Only or Seal-Ready Finish

On standard interlocking concrete paver fields, we install joint material selected for the paver type, measured joint width and written manufacturer guidance. Polymeric is considered only for compatible, measured 1/2-inch-or-wider joints when the manufacturer's current instructions permit it.

Built for the next step

Re-sanding should make the paver field easier to maintain.

When the joints, drainage and coating plan work together, future visits become maintenance instead of another expensive restart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do pavers need to be re-sanded before sealing?
If the joints are low, loose, contaminated, full of weeds or washing out, they should be corrected before sealing. On standard interlocking concrete paver fields, we install joint material selected for the paver type, measured joint width and written manufacturer guidance. Polymeric is considered only for compatible pavers with measured joints at least 1/2 inch wide when the manufacturer's current instructions permit it.
When do you use polymeric sand?
We do not recommend polymeric as the default. We consider it only when the paver is compatible, the measured joints are at least 1/2 inch wide and the manufacturer's current instructions permit that application.
What sand do you use on standard paver fields?
On standard interlocking concrete paver fields, we select joint material for the paver type, measured joint width and written manufacturer guidance. We choose the color separately and follow applicable CMHA/ICPI guidance plus the selected material manufacturer's current instructions.
Can you clean pavers without sealing them?
Yes. Some customers only need cleaning and re-sanding. We will recommend sealing when it makes sense, but we do not force it if the surface does not need it yet.
