Those Black Streaks on Your Florida Roof Are Alive. Here's How to Kill Them.

The dark streaks on Tampa Bay roofs are not dirt. They are algae growing on the shingle surface. Here is how to remove them without damaging pressure.
If your Tampa Bay roof has dark, almost-black streaks running down from the ridge, that is not dirt and it will not rinse off in the rain. It is a living algae called Gloeocapsa magma, and it is feeding on your roof.
What is Gloeocapsa magma?
A cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that eats the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It loves Florida heat and humidity, and it spreads by airborne spores. That is why you will see it on one house, then a few years later on half the roofs on the street.

Why it matters
- It can shorten roof life. As algae holds moisture and feeds on filler in asphalt shingles, the roof can shed protective granules faster.
- It can raise attic heat. Dark streaks absorb more heat than a clean roof surface.
- It hurts curb appeal. A streaked roof reads as "neglected" even when the rest of the home is spotless.
- It spreads. Left alone, algae usually gets worse in Florida's humid climate.
What not to do
- Do not pressure wash a roof. High pressure can strip protective granules, crack tile, and create warranty problems.
- Do not rely on bleach alone. Strong, unmanaged runoff can damage landscaping and stain siding.
- Do not wait until the whole roof is black. The earlier treatment is usually simpler and less aggressive.
What actually works: soft washing with algaecide
A professional soft wash uses low pressure (garden-hose level) plus a carefully mixed algaecide that kills Gloeocapsa magma at the root. The important part is that the chemistry does the cleaning, not high-pressure water.
What a soft wash day looks like
- Landscaping pre-soaked with water and tarped where needed
- Algaecide solution applied across the roof
- A short dwell time while it kills the algae
- A gentle low-pressure rinse
- Landscaping rinsed again and double-checked
- Results that keep improving over the next 1 to 2 weeks as the dead algae releases
What to send us so we can quote
A photo from the street showing the whole roof, a closer shot of the worst streaking, and your rough address so we can gauge pitch and access from there. Roof quotes are often same-day from photos.
Tampa Bay roof factors we look at
- Tree cover. Oaks and palms keep roofs damp and drop organic debris into valleys.
- Roof material. Shingle, tile, and metal roofs all need different care and access planning.
- Pitch and height. Steeper or taller roofs take more setup and safety time.
- Gutters and downspouts. Dirty runoff can streak fascia and siding if drainage is already clogged.
- Nearby surfaces. A roof cleaning often reveals that the house exterior or paver entry needs attention too.
When to schedule roof cleaning
Schedule when streaks are visible but before the whole roof turns dark. That gives the treatment an easier job and keeps the property from looking neglected in listing photos, HOA reviews, or insurance inspections. In shaded Pasco and Pinellas neighborhoods, checking the roof once a year is a simple habit that prevents surprises.
Roof material notes
- Asphalt shingles: soft wash only, with careful runoff control around gutters and landscaping.
- Tile roofs: avoid high pressure and foot traffic that can crack tiles.
- Metal roofs: use the right chemistry and rinse pattern so oxidation and runoff do not stain nearby surfaces.
The method changes by material, but the rule does not: let chemistry and dwell time do the cleaning instead of force.
What happens after roof cleaning
A roof can look much better the same day, but some staining continues to lighten as dead algae releases and rinses away with normal weather. That is normal. We also recommend checking siding, soffits, gutters, and entry pavers after the roof is cleaned because runoff and algae growth rarely stop at one surface. A combined house wash and roof clean can make the whole property look maintained instead of just fixing the roof.
How to keep streaks from coming back fast
Keep tree debris out of valleys, flush clogged gutters, and rinse heavy pollen or leaf litter from lower roof edges when it is safe from the ground. You cannot stop Florida humidity, but you can remove the organic material that keeps a roof damp. Pairing roof cleaning with gutter and house washing also reduces dirty runoff marks on the rest of the property.
How long results last and what it costs
Expect 3 to 5 years before it returns, longer with less tree cover. A typical Tampa Bay shingle roof runs $399 to $1,495 depending on size, pitch, and access. We price it free, and we back shingle roofs with a 2-year spot-clean warranty.
